and this wording implies that the hands were raised with every single takbir. Ahmad makes this explicit in another report (4/317) transmitted through a third route from ʿAbd al-Jabbar ibn Wāʾil, from his father. All of its transmitters are declared reliable, yet the chain is broken. Abū Dāwūd supplied a connected chain that is sound, but it only states that the hands were raised when rising from prostration, not when going down into it; the details will be given in the appropriate place, God willing. 3) The ḥadith of Anas ibn Mālik: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to raise his hands when he entered the prayer, when he bowed, when he raised his head from bowing, and when he prostrated.” It was recorded by al-Dāraqutnī, Ibn Ḥazm (4/92), and al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī in al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtāra, through ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAbd al-Majīd al-Thaqafī, from Ḥumayd, from Anas. Qāḍī Aḥmad Muḥammad Shākir commented: “This chain is extremely sound.” That judgment would be unquestioned were it not that al-Dāraqutnī—and, above him, al-Ṭaḥāwī—declared the report to be mawqūf on Anas, as already noted under “Raising the Hands in Bowing” (p. 608). The likely resolution is the established critical rule that an additional detail supplied by a trustworthy narrator is accepted. Here the additional detail comes from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Thaqafī, a reliable imām cited by both Ṣaḥīḥs; since he raised the report to the Prophet, his addition must be received. Al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (2/102) after quoting the ḥadith: “It was narrated by Abū Yaʿlā and its transmitters are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Dirāya (p. 81): “Its transmitters are trustworthy.” I add: al-Maqdisī also gives another wording in al-Mukhtāra through Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shayba, who said: “He narrated to us…”
