Prostration

Pronouncing the takbir and raising the hands when descending into prostration (*)

Then: “He, ﷺ, would pronounce the takbir and move down into prostration.” (1) He also instructed the man who prayed incorrectly to do likewise, saying to him:

“No one’s prayer is complete until … he says, ‘Samiʿa Allahu liman ḥamidah’ (Allah hears the one who praises Him), stands upright; then says, ‘Allahu akbar’ (Allah is Most Great); and then prostrates until his joints come to rest.” (2)

Likewise: “Whenever he intended to prostrate, he would pronounce the takbir, keep his arms away from his sides, and then prostrate.” (3)

“And on occasion he would raise his hands when he prostrated.” (4)

(*) This heading is not found in the original manuscript; we observed that the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—refers to it as a separate topic in several places of this book, so we have inserted it as a heading. See pp. 610, 799, and elsewhere. (1) This point has already been mentioned under the hadith of Abu Hurayrah concerning his rising from ruku (p. 674). (2) Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Hakim, who graded it sahih; al-Dhahabi agreed. Its documentation has previously been given on p. 189. (3) Reported by Abu Ya‘la in his Musnad (folio 284/2) with a good chain, and by Ibn Khuzaymah (1/79/2) with another sound chain. (4) Ten Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—narrated that the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands in this manner. I have cited their hadiths individually, analyzed them, and authenticated them in al-Ta‘liqat al-Jiyad ‘ala Zad al-Ma‘ad, specifying which chains are sound and which are weak. Taken together, the supporting reports render the practice certain, to the point that anyone who surveys them all reaches unwavering conviction that it is established—and even mutawatir—from the Prophet ﷺ. Below, we will quote only those narrations whose chains are sound and beyond reproach:
