Their claim that “no repetition of tasbih has been prescribed for this position, … etc.” clashes with what has already been reported—that the Prophet ﷺ used to repeat in it the phrase: li-rabbi al-hamd, li-rabbi al-hamd (To my Lord be all praise). That statement and any analogy based on it are therefore void and deserve no attention. (1) I.e., he forgot the obligation to proceed to prostration. It may also mean that he forgot he was in prayer, or that he supposed it was the moment for qunut (Fath al-Bari). (2) The report is from Anas ibn Malik. Thabit narrated from him: “I spare no effort in leading you in prayer exactly as I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lead us.” Anas used to do something I do not see you doing: when he raised his head from rukūʿ he would stand upright until someone said, “He has forgotten,” and when he lifted his head from sujūd he would pause until someone said, “He has forgotten.” Reported by al-Bukhari, 2:239; Muslim, 2:45; and al-Bayhaqi, 2:98, 121, through Hammad ibn Zayd. Hammad ibn Salamah also transmitted it—Muslim; Abu Dawud, 1:136; and Ahmad, 3:247—Abu Dawud adding Humaid to the chain alongside Thabit. Sulayman ibn al-Mughira related it similarly (Ahmad, 3:223), as did Maʿmar (Ahmad, 3:162). Shuʿbah narrated an abridged version: “Anas used to describe for us the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ; he would pray, and when he raised his head from bowing he would stand until we said, ‘He has forgotten.’”
