Prolonging this standing and the obligation of composure during it
He—peace and blessings be upon him—would make that standing almost as long as his bowing, as noted earlier (1); indeed, he would
(1) The report goes back to al-Baraʾ ibn ʿAzib; its documentation was cited earlier at the close of the section on rukūʿ (p. 667). Ibn Hajar states in Fath al-Bari:
“Ibn Daqiq al-ʿId said: This hadith shows that the iʿtidal (the standing after bowing) is itself a lengthy pillar. The hadith of Anas—quoted next—is even clearer, indeed explicit, on this point. One should not abandon such evidence for a weak argument, namely their claim that no repetition of tasbih is prescribed here as it is in rukūʿ and sujūd. The weakness of that claim lies in its being mere analogy set against an explicit text, and such analogy is invalid.
Moreover, the dhikr legislated for the iʿtidal is longer than that prescribed for the rukūʿ: repeating ‘Subhana rabbiyal-ʿazim’ three times equals in length the phrase ‘Allahumma rabbana wa laka al-hamd, hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi.’ In fact, an even longer formula has been sanctioned for the iʿtidal, as shown earlier in the hadith of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri and others.
The preceding hadith also records that the Prophet ﷺ did not object when a Companion added an untransmitted dhikr during the iʿtidal. Hence al-Nawawi ruled that this brief pillar may be lengthened with additional dhikr, contrary to what the dominant position in the madhhab holds.”
Ibn Hajar continues: “Al-Shafiʿi likewise hinted in al-Umm (1/98) that the prayer is not invalidated by such lengthening; under the heading ‘How to rise from bowing’ he writes: ‘If someone prolongs the standing to praise Allah or supplicates inadvertently without intending qunut, I dislike it for him but he need not repeat the prayer …’ and so forth.
It is therefore astonishing that anyone should still declare a prayer void for lengthening the iʿtidal. Their justification—that prolongation nullifies the required continuity (muwalat) between the pillars—is flawed, for continuity simply means that no lengthy interval intervenes between the pillars with something alien to them; whatever the Shariah itself prescribes cannot be excluded from the acts of the prayer.” End of citation.
