10- “Our Lord! All praise is Yours—praise that is abundant, pure, and full of blessing, [blessed
(10) The report comes from Rifa‛a ibn Rafi‛, who said: “One day we were praying behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ …” (ellipsis in the original). It was recorded by Malik (1/214) and, through his chain, by al-Bukhari (2/227–228), Abu Dawud (1/123), al-Nasa’i (1/162), al-Bayhaqi (2/95) and Ahmad (4/340); all of them cite it from Malik → Nu‛aym ibn ‛Abd Allah al-Mujmir → ‛Ali ibn Yahya al-Zuraqi → his father → Rifa‛a.
Al-Hakim (1/225) also transmitted it from Malik, stating: “Authentic, yet the two shaykhs did not include it,” a view endorsed by al-Dhahabi. Both were mistaken, for al-Bukhari actually did record it.
The hadith has another chain, with additional wording, in Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i (1/147), al-Tirmidhi (2/254–255) and al-Bayhaqi: Rifa‛a ibn Yahya ibn ‛Abd Allah ibn Rifa‛a ibn Rafi‛ al-Zuraqi → his paternal uncle Mu‛adh ibn Rifa‛a → his father. Its text reads: “I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sneezed, so I said: al-hamdu lillah, hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarak-an fihi, mubarak-an ‛alayhi, kama yuhibbu rabbuna wa yarda (Praise be to Allah—an abundant, pure and blessed praise, blessed and accepted as our Lord loves and approves). When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer he turned and asked three times, ‘Who spoke during the prayer?’ until Rifa‛a ibn Rafi‛ ibn ‛Afra replied, ‘It was I, O Messenger of Allah!’ …” The remainder matches the earlier version.
Al-Tirmidhi judged it “hasan,” and that ruling is sound. This version contains additions absent from the first: here the words follow a sneeze, whereas the previous narration places them after rising from ruku‛. Ibn Hajar reconciled the two by noting that the sneeze occurred after the rise from ruku‛.
