At other times he would say:
3. “Allahumma, our Lord, to You belongs all praise,” sometimes with the initial “and.”
3- Ibn al-Qayyim’s rejection in Zad (1/78) of the variant that combines the opening “Allahumma” with the conjunction “wa” is an oversight that should not be relied upon, because the wording is authenticated in al-Bukhari and other sources. Hence al-Zurqani expressed astonishment in Sharh al-Mawahib (7/318), and Ibn Hajar answered him in Fath al-Bari (2/225).
Al-Bukhari (2/224) and Ahmad (2/452) transmit the report through several chains from Ibn Abi Dhiʿb, from Saʿid al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah:
“When the Prophet would say, ‘Samiʿa Allahu liman hamidah’ (Allah hears the one who praises Him), he would respond, ‘Allahumma rabbana wa laka’l-hamd’ (O Allah, our Lord, and to You belongs the praise).”
I have located another chain for it, recorded by al-Nasai (1/162) and Ahmad (2/270) from ʿAbd al-Razzaq, who said: Maʿmar narrated to us from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah:
“When the Messenger of Allah raised his head from bowing he would say, ‘Allahumma rabbana wa laka’l-hamd.’”
This sanad is sound according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim.
The report is further corroborated:
• by a narration from Ibn ʿUmar cited earlier under “Raising the Hands,” recorded by al-Darimi (1/300);
• and by Abu Saʿid al-Khudri in al-Bayhaqi (2/94), which will be mentioned shortly, God willing.
