And he would raise(1) his hands during this upright position, exactly as described earlier for the opening takbīr, and while standing—as noted above—he would say:
- “Our Lord, to You belongs all praise.” At other times he would say:
- “Our Lord, praise is Yours,” without the initial “and.”
It is likewise narrated by al-Tahawi (1/140), al-Tayalisi, and Ahmad. Ahmad also records a second version (2/467) identical to the report transmitted by Suhayl. The complete wording has already been cited in the section on “Standing” (p. 87), and its chain meets Muslim’s criteria.
(1) We have collected the reports on this point from a group of Companions—twenty in all—in the discussion of “Raising the Hands when Bowing.” There we also summarized the scholars’ opinions and named the Hanafi authorities who regard the practice as prescribed; see pp. 601–622.
1- This is one recension of the Abu Hurayrah hadith just mentioned. It is corroborated by several other narrations:
• From Ibn ʿUmar, in both Sahih collections and elsewhere (see “Raising the Hands”).
• From ʿAishah, related by al-Bukhari (2/427), Muslim (3/28), al-Tahawi (1/141) and others in the eclipse-prayer narration.
• From Abu Saʿid al-Khudri in one of his reports, to be cited below.
2- This is another recension of the same Abu Hurayrah hadith. It too has supporting evidence:
• From Hudhayfah, whose full wording appeared under “Recitation in the Night Prayer.”
• From Abu Saʿid, reported by Muslim and others, as will be mentioned further on.
