Among those reports is the hadith of Ibn Umar, recorded by the two Sahihs and others; we already cited it under “Opening the Prayer.” Another comes from Ibn Abbas and from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, both of which will be mentioned shortly, God willing; while the report of Hudhayfa has already been quoted under “Recitation in the Night Prayer.”
These ahadith indicate that the sunnah for the imam is to combine the tasmiʿ (saying Samiʿa Allahu liman hamidah while rising) with the tahmid (saying Rabbana wa-laka al-hamd once fully erect).
This is the view of the majority of scholars. It was held by ʿAtaʾ, Abu Burda, Muhammad b. Sirin, Ishaq, and Dawud (see al-Majmuʿ 3/419), by Ahmad as well—as cited by al-Tirmidhi—and Abu Dawud transmits it from him in his Masāʾil (no. 33); we shall quote his exact words shortly (*). It is also the position of the two Hanafi imams Abu Yusuf and Muhammad (al-Tahawi 1/140–42), and it was chosen by (1).
By contrast, Abu Hanifa, Malik and others restrict the imam to the tasmiʿ alone. They cite the forthcoming hadith of Abu Hurayra, but, as we shall explain, it furnishes no conclusive proof.
Supporting the first view is the next hadith in which the Prophet said, “Pray as you have seen me pray.” This general command applies to every worshipper: he must say and do what the Prophet said and did. It is impermissible to set aside a hadith—especially one that reaches, or nearly reaches, the level of tawatur, such as the Abu Hurayra report under discussion—in favor of another narration so long as the two can be reconciled, as in …

(1) The same choice was made by al-Fadli, al-Shurunbulali, the author of al-Munya, and most later Hanafi scholars; it is the sounder view and accords with what is authentically established from the Prophet. See ʿUmda al-Riʿaya, p. 137.
