“The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, drew back the curtain while the people were standing in rows behind Abu Bakr and said: ‘O people! Nothing now remains of the glad tidings of prophethood except the righteous dream that a Muslim himself sees or that is shown to him. Indeed, I…’ and so on.”
Recorded by Muslim (2/48); Abu Awana (2/170); Abu Dawud (1/140); al-Nasa i (1/160, 168); al-Darimi (1/304); al-Tahawi (1/137); al-Bayhaqi (2/87–88, 110); and Ahmad (1/219) through Sulayman ibn Suhaym—Ibrahim ibn Abd Allah ibn Ma bad—his father—from him.
Ibn Majah transmits only the first sentence.
A corroborating report comes from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. Al-Numan ibn Sa d related:
A man asked him, “May I recite while bowing and prostrating?” He replied that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, said: “I have been forbidden to recite during bowing and prostration. When you bow, magnify Allah; when you prostrate, strive earnestly in supplication, for it is most likely (qamin) that your prayer will be answered.”
Reported by al-Tahawi and by Abd Allah in the appendix to the Musnad of his father (1/155) through Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq.
Abd al-Rahman is weak according to unanimous judgment, as al-Haythami states (2/127).
There is also a hadith of Abu Hurayra on supplication while prostrating; it will be cited in its proper place, if Allah wills.
