The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“When they become mixed together, what suffices is the takbīr and a nod of the head.” (1)
He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
“The whole span between East and West is one single qiblah.” (2)
they said:
“Likewise, if a man is on the ground and fears that, should he prostrate, a wild beast may attack him or someone may strike him with a sword, he may pray seated—if he fears the same while standing—and perform only head-gestures.”
(1) This sentence forms part of the Ibn ʿUmar report cited above (p. 67). Al-Bayhaqi transmitted it (3/255–256) with the same chain found in the two Sahihs, and his version contains this very clause. Muslim also recorded it, where Ibn ʿUmar says: “If the fear is greater than that, then pray mounted or standing and signal with head-gestures.” Although outwardly this looks mawquf (stopped at Ibn ʿUmar), we have already shown above that the entire narration is marfuʿ; see the earlier discussion.
(2) This is an authentic hadith. Al-Tirmidhi (2/171) and Ibn Majah (317) transmitted it through Abu Maʿshar Najih—Muhammad b. ʿAmr—Abu Salamah—from Abu Hurayrah as a marfuʿ report. Abu Maʿshar is weak; al-Tirmidhi said: “Some scholars have criticized Abu Maʿshar’s memory.” Yet he is not the sole transmitter: al-Tirmidhi also recorded it with a different chain, stating (173): al-Hasan b. Abi Bakr al-Marwazi—al-Muʿalla b. Mansur—ʿAbd Allah b. Jaʿfar al-Mukhrimi—ʿUthman b. Muhammad al-Akhnasi—Saʿid al-Maqburi—from Abu Hurayrah, marfuʿ; and he ruled: “A hasan sahih (sound and reliable) hadith.” He added:
