and by Abu Awana (2/174), al-Nasai (1/160, 168), al-Bayhaqi (2/87), and Ahmad (1/114, 123) through several chains from Ibrahim ibn Abd Allah ibn Hunayn, from his father, who said that he heard Ali ibn Abi Talib say … (the hadith).
Some transmitters give it as: “from his father, from Ibn Abbas, from him,” thereby inserting Ibn Abbas into the chain; this is the version found in al-Nasai, Muslim, Abu Awana (2/171, 172), and one narration of Ahmad.
The hadith was also reported by Malik (1/101)—and through him Muhammad (p. 154)—al-Tirmidhi (2/51–52), Abu Awana (2/175), and Ahmad (1/126) from Nafiʿ, from Ibrahim, in the first form, omitting the mention of prostration.
The same abridged wording appears in another report of Muslim and in Abu Awana (2/168 and 172–175) through various routes from Ibrahim.
Al-Nasai likewise transmitted it via a different isnad: from Ashʿath, from Muhammad ibn Ubayda (*) from Ali. I do not know this Muhammad ibn Ubayda.
Additional chains exist, among them the route: Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla → Abd al-Karim → Abd Allah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal → Ibn Abbas → Ali, with the full wording; recorded by Abd Allah ibn Ahmad in the Musnad of his father (1/105, 116).
Ibn Abi Layla is known for weak memory, whereas this Abd al-Karim is Ibn Abi al-Mukharraq, a narrator deemed reliable by Muslim, as are those above him (**).
(*) Thus in the printed text; the correct reading is “Muhammad, from Ubayda,” as in al-Nasai’s al-Sunan al-Sughra and al-Sunan al-Kubra.
(**) Thus in the printed text; the correct judgement is: “Ibn Abi al-Mukharraq is weak.” The author apparently had in mind Abd al-Karim al-Jazari, who is indeed trustworthy; see p. 575 and al-Silsila al-Daʿifa 5/218–219 and 6/81.
