(1) The Messenger of Allah ﷺ often said: “Subhan Allah wa-bi-hamdihi, astaghfiru Allah, wa-atubu ilayh (Glory be to Allah and with His praise; I ask Allah’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance).” She said: “O Messenger of Allah, I notice that you frequently repeat, ‘Subhan Allah wa-bi-hamdihi, astaghfiru Allah, wa-atubu ilayh’? ” He replied: “My Lord informed me that I would see a sign in my community, and when I should see it I was to increase in saying, ‘Subhan Allah wa-bi-hamdihi, astaghfiru Allah, wa-atubu ilayh.’ I have now seen it: ‘Idha jaa nasru Allah wa-l-fath—(that is, the conquest of Makka)—wa ra’ayta n-nasa yadkhuluna fi din Allah afwajan. Fa-sabbih bi-hamdi rabbika wa-staghfirhu innahu kana tawwaba’ (Q 110:1–3).”
Ahmad’s wording adds: “a sign in my community, and He commanded me that when I saw it … .”
Al-Hafiz was mistaken when he attributed this version solely to Ibn Mardawayh.
I have found corroboration in the hadith of Ibn Masud: when the verse ‘Idha jaa nasru Allah wa-l-fath’ was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would frequently, after reciting it and then bowing, say three times: “Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbana wa-bi-hamdik, Allahumma-ighfir li; innaka anta t-tawwab ar-rahim (Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and with Your praise. O Allah, forgive me; indeed You are the Oft-Returning, the Most Merciful).”
Ibn Nasr narrated it (pp. 75–76) through Israil from Abu Ubayda from him; its transmitters are those accepted by al-Bukhari and Muslim, but the chain is interrupted. In Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid (2/127) it states: “It was transmitted by Ahmad, Abu Yaʿla, al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani in al-Awsat. In the first three isnads Abu Ubayda relates from his father, whom he never met; the transmitters in al-Tabarani’s version are all those of the Sahih except for Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, who is reliable but suffered memory confusion.”
