“And if they are more than that, let them pray standing or mounted.”
Al-Tabari also reported it with al-Bukhari’s chain, in these words: Ibn ʿUmar said, “When the fighters become mixed together—meaning during battle—one suffices with remembrance of Allah and head-gestures.” Ibn ʿUmar added: “The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘If they are …,’ and so on.”
I add: al-Bayhaqi (3/255) transmitted the same.
Ibn Majah (1/379) likewise recorded it, through ʿUbayd Allah b. ʿUmar, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, in the hadith on the *salat al-khawf*: “The imam leads one contingent …,” and in it occurs: “… and if the fear is even greater than that, then [pray] on foot or mounted.”
This provides strong corroboration for Ibn al-Mundhir’s completely marfuʿ version. Al-Hafiz comments: “Its chain is good. In summary, scholars differed over the clause, ‘If the fear is even greater than that …’: is it marfuʿ or merely Ibn ʿUmar’s own statement? The stronger position is that it is marfuʿ. Allah knows best.”
He then says: “The phrase ‘and if they are more than that’—that is, if the enemy are more numerous—means that when fear intensifies and the enemy are many, so that dividing the ranks would be perilous, the prayer may then be offered according to what is feasible. One may dispense with any pillars that cannot be fulfilled: one moves from standing to bowing, and from bowing and prostration to mere nodding, and the like. This is the view of the majority. The Malikites, however, hold that such concessions are not taken unless one fears the prayer time will elapse.”
Al-Tahawi (1/190) records the same opinion from the three Imams, saying:
