(8) It is related from an unnamed Companion who said: “I prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ. We then asked him about the length of his bowing and prostration, and he replied: ‘As long as it takes a person to say subhana Allah wa bi-hamdih (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him) three times.’” Imam Ahmad recorded the report (5/6) through ‘Affan → Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Tufawi → Saʿid al-Jurayri → a man of Banu Tamim—about whom he spoke favourably—narrating from his father or his uncle. Al-Bayhaqi (2/111) transmitted it as well from Ali ibn al-Madini → Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Tufawi with the same chain, but omitting the words “or his uncle.” All the transmitters in this isnad are reliable and are found in al-Bukhari, apart from the unnamed Tamimi. Ibn al-Qayyim remarks in his treatise al-Salat: “He is unknown; neither his identity nor his standing is established.” I add: Abu Dawud (1/141)—and, through him, al-Bayhaqi—also reported it via Khalid ibn Abd Allah → Saʿid al-Jurayri → al-Saʿdi → his father or his uncle, who said: “I observed the Prophet ﷺ in his prayer; he would remain firmly in his bowing and prostration for as long as it takes to say subhana Allah wa bi-hamdih three times.” Ahmad (5/271) likewise records it with this wording, except that he says: “from his father, from his uncle.” Ibn Hajar comments in al-Talkhis (3/394): “Its isnad is hasan, and it does not contain the phrase wa bi-hamdih.” So he states, yet the phrase is clearly present here, and the chain contains al-Saʿdi, whom he himself describes in al-Taqrib as: “Unknown; unnamed and unclassified.”
