As for the prayer performed in a time of intense danger, the Prophet ﷺ laid down for his community that they may pray “on foot—standing on their own feet—or while mounted, whether facing the qiblah or not.” (1)
I add: that is, it refers to the forthcoming report of Ibn ʿUmar, namely:
(1) Malik recorded it in the Muwattaʾ (1/193); al-Bukhari (8/161) transmitted it through his chain; Muhammad [b. al-Hasan] in his Muwattaʾ (p. 155); al-Shafiʿi in al-Umm (1/83); and, through him, al-Bayhaqi (2/8), all from Nafiʿ:
Whenever ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar was asked about the *salat al-khawf* (prayer in time of danger) he would say, “The imam advances with one group …,” and then he related the remainder of the incident. Ibn ʿUmar added, “If the danger becomes more intense than that, then pray on foot, standing on your feet, or mounted, whether facing the qiblah or not.”
Malik said: Nafiʿ remarked, “I do not think ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar mentioned this except on the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Ibn Khuzaymah also reported it from Malik without hesitation (Talkhis, 3/209). [It is likewise cited in al-Irwaʾ, no. 588.]
Muslim (2/212) transmitted a similar version, marfuʿ, through Sufyan al-Thawri, from Musa b. ʿUqbah, from Nafiʿ; at the end it says: “Ibn ʿUmar added: If the fear is even greater than that, pray while mounted or standing, indicating with nods.” Muslim thus treated only this final sentence as mawquf.
Al-Hafiz (2/326) comments: “Ibn al-Mundhir narrated it through Dawud b. ʿAbd al-Rahman, from Musa b. ʿUqbah, entirely as mawquf, but concluded: ‘Nafiʿ informed us that ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar used to relate this from the Prophet ﷺ,’ which implies that the whole report is marfuʿ.”
Al-Bukhari (2/345) likewise recorded it through Ibn Jurayj, from Musa, as a marfuʿ report, with the wording:
