“Al-Tabarani recorded it in all three of his Muʿjams with a good chain.” Al-Haythami says the same, adding: “Al-Tabarani related it in the three collections, and its transmitters are reliable.” A further supporting narration comes from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri. Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/89/2 = 1/257, no. 2960), al-Tayalisi (no. 294), and Ahmad (3/56) transmit it through ʿAli b. Zayd → Saʿid b. al-Musayyib → him, as a marfuʿ report with similar wording. Al-Suyuti remarks in Tanwir al-Hawalik, “Its isnad is sound.” That, however, is open to objection, for ʿAli b. Zayd (Ibn Judʿan) is disputed; al-Taqrib rates him “weak,” so his solitary report is not dependable. Nevertheless, his narration is acceptable as corroborative evidence, as is the case here. Another support comes from al-Nuʿman b. Murrah. Malik included it in the Muwattaʾ (1/181) via Yahya b. Saʿid from him; this is a mursal chain but its isnad is authentic. The wording of al-Nuʿman b. Murrah’s report is: “What do you think about the drinker, the thief, and the fornicator?”—this was before the legal penalties concerning them were revealed. They replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “They are grave offenses that incur punishment, and the worst kind of theft is when a person steals from his prayer.” Al-Baji says:
