Through the same route al-Tabarani recorded it in both al-Kabir and al-Awsat (Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 2/120), and Ibn Hibban likewise included it in his Sahih (al-Targhib, 1/183). Yahya has an additional isnad for the report. It was cited by al-Hakim, then by al-Bayhaqi from him, as well as by al-Darimi (1/304) and Ahmad (5/310), on the authority of al-Walid b. Muslim → al-Awzaʿi → him → ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Qatadah → his father, raised to the Prophet. Al-Hakim judged it “sound according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi concurred. That verdict holds if the narration is free of al-Walid b. Muslim’s tadlis, for he transmitted it with an unqualified “from,” as is evident. Al-Tabarani also reported it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat (cited in Majmaʿ), remarking, “Its transmitters are the men of the Sahih.” Ibn Khuzaymah placed it in his Sahih as well (al-Targhib, 1/181). The hadith has supporting narrations. One comes from ʿAbd Allah b. Mughaffal: al-Tabarani produced it in al-Saghir (p. 67) with the chain: Jaʿfar b. Maʿdan al-Ahwazi → Zayd b. al-Harish → ʿUthman b. al-Haytham → ʿAwf → al-Hasan → him. Al-Tabarani observed, “Zayd b. al-Harish is the sole narrator of it.” I note that Ibn Hibban, in al-Thiqat, says of him, “He occasionally errs,” while Ibn al-Qattan deems him “of unknown status.” The remainder of the transmitters are reliable and are among al-Bukhari’s narrators, as al-Mundhiri (1/181) also indicates.
