It was recorded by al-Bukhari (2/179; 11/448), Muslim (2/28), al-Nasa’i (1/161, 168), al-Bayhaqi (2/117), al-Tayalisi (267) and Ahmad (3/115, 170, 231, 274, 279) through several chains from Qatadah on his authority. In al-Bukhari’s version—also preserved by al-Nasa’i—Qatadah explicitly says, “he narrated to us.” (1) The report belongs to the transmissions of the commanders of the army corps—ʿAmr b. al-ʿAs, Khalid b. al-Walid and Shurahbil b. Hasanah—who heard it directly from the Messenger of Allah. It is narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir (1/192/1) and by Abu Yaʿla in his Musnad (1/340, 349) through the route of Abu Salih from Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Ashʿari: “The Messenger of Allah saw …” etc. Abu Salih said, “I asked Abu ʿAbd Allah, ‘Who related this from the Messenger of Allah?’ He replied, ‘The commanders of the army corps …’” and he named them. Al-Mundhiri in al-Targhib (1/182), followed by al-Haythami (2/121), judged the chain sound (hasan), and that appraisal is correct. Ibn Khuzaymah also recorded it in his Sahih (1/82/1); al-Ajurri in al-Arbaʿin, no. 20; and al-Bayhaqi (2/89) through the isnad of al-Walid b. Muslim—who said, “Shaybah b. al-Ahnaf al-Awzaʿi told us; Abu Salam al-Aswad told us; Abu Salih al-Ashʿari from Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Ashʿari”—with similar wording and the additional phrase, “the commanders of the army corps.”
