—and he would keep his arms apart, distancing his elbows from his sides. (1)
the rakʿah, completed his prayer, and then said, “This is how we saw the Messenger of Allah pray.”
Reported by Abu Dawud (1/138)—this is his wording—and, through his chain, by al-Bayhaqi (2/127); also by al-Nasaʾi (1/159) and al-Hakim (1/222) through Jarir, while al-Nasaʾi’s route is through Abu al-Ahwas; both narrate it from Ataʾ.
Al-Tayalisi (no. 86) transmits it via Hammam with the wording: “and he spread his fingers.”
The same is related by al-Darimi (1/299). Al-Tahawi (1/135) and Ahmad (4/119) record: “so that his fingers extended beyond his shins.”
Ahmad (4/120), as well as al-Nasaʾi and al-Bayhaqi (2/121), further relate it through Zaidah b. Qudamah with the wording: “he spread his fingers behind his knees.” Al-Hakim declared the chain sahih, and al-Dhahabi concurred.
(1) This description is established from several Companions. Among them is Abu Humayd—in the presence of others—who said: “He placed his hands on his knees as though grasping them, straightened his arms, and kept them away from his sides” (al-Tirmidhi’s wording). Abu Dawud adds: “and he distanced them.”
