and it is corroborated by the earlier statement of ʿUmar (no. 629): “Part of the sunnah is to grasp the knees.” The hadith of Saʿd cited there offers the same support, and Ibn Khuzaymah (1/301/595) as well as Ibn al-Jarud (196) declared it authentic. (1) This refers to one of the narrations of the hadith of Abu Masʿud al-Badri mentioned above. The same additional wording appears in a report collected by Abu Dawud (1/116)—and transmitted from him by al-Bayhaqi (2/84)—on the authority of Abu Humayd al-Saʿidi. Its chain contains ʿAbd Allah b. Lahiʿa, who is weak because of poor memory; nevertheless, the preceding evidence strengthens it, and it is further supported by the hadith of Waʾil b. Hujr, stating that the Prophet would spread his fingers when he bowed. Al-Hakim recorded this latter report (1/224) through ʿAmr b. ʿAwn—Hushaym—from ʿAsim b. Kulayb, from ʿAlqamah b. Waʾil, from his father, and ruled it “sound according to Muslim’s criteria,” a judgment with which al-Dhahabi concurred. Al-Tabarani also transmitted it in al-Kabir with the further wording: “and when he prostrated he brought his fingers together.” Al-Haythami (2/135) commented that its chain is hasan. I add: al-Bayhaqi (2/112) likewise reported it in full through al-Harith b. ʿAbd Allah b. Ismaʿil b. ʿUqbah al-Khazin, who said, “Hushaym narrated it to us.”
