Another report is narrated by Amr ibn Murra, from Khaythama ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Sabrah al-Juʿfi, who said: “I arrived in Madinah and began performing tatbiq (placing one hand over the other between the thighs) in ruku just as the companions of Abd Allah [ibn Masud] did. A man asked, ‘Servant of Allah, why are you doing this?’ I replied, ‘Abd Allah used to do it, and he stated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did it as well.’ The man said, ‘Abd Allah told the truth, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sometimes practise a matter and later Allah prescribed something else. Look, therefore, to what the Muslims have unanimously adopted and follow it.’ When I returned home, I no longer performed tatbiq.”
Al-Bayhaqi records this (2/84) with a sound chain. Al-Hazimi (p. 62) transmits it through another route from Khaythama, adding that the unnamed man was one of the muhajirun.
After citing the hadith of Umar, al-Tirmidhi remarks: “This is the practice followed by the scholars among the Companions, the Followers, and those after them; they differ in nothing except for what is reported from Ibn Masud and some of his companions, that they used to perform tatbiq.”
Numerous hadiths affirm that the Prophet ﷺ placed his hands on his knees during ruku:
1) The hadith of Abu Humayd al-Saʿidi, narrated by ten Companions: “Then he bowed and placed his palms on his knees.” This is sahih and was quoted in full above (p. 605). Al-Bukhari (2/245) also records it with the wording: “When he bowed, he set his hands firmly upon his knees,” which will be cited later.
2) Another report comes from Waʾil ibn Hujr, with the wording:
