“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the prayer: he pronounced the takbir and raised his hands, then when he bowed (ruku) he clasped his hands together and placed them between his knees. When this report reached Saʿd, he said, ‘My brother has spoken the truth; we used to do that, then we were commanded to do this,’ and he grasped his knees.
Al-Bukhari recorded it in his monograph on Raising the Hands (no. 12); it is also found in Abu Dawud (no. 732), al-Nasaʾi (1/159), al-Daraqutni (129), al-Bayhaqi (2/78–79), Ahmad (1/418–419), and al-Hazimi (pp. 61–62). Al-Daraqutni commented: “Its chain is firmly authentic.” I add: it satisfies Muslim’s conditions. Al-Hakim likewise transmitted it (1/224) and said, “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria,” a judgment affirmed by al-Dhahabi. The wording cited here follows Ahmad’s version. Al-Bukhari remarked, “We practised that in the early days of Islam.”
A second supporting narration comes from Musʿab ibn Saʿd, who said: “I prayed beside my father and clasped my hands, placing them between my thighs. My father stopped me and said, ‘We used to do that, but we were forbidden to continue and ordered to rest our hands on the knees.’”
This report is found in al-Bukhari (2/217–218), Muslim (2/69), Abu Dawud (1/138), al-Nasaʾi (1/159), al-Tirmidhi (2/44), al-Darimi (1/298), Ibn Majah (1/285), al-Tahawi (1/133), al-Bayhaqi (2/83–84), al-Tayalisi (28), Ahmad (1/181–182), and al-Hazimi (p. 61) through the route of Abu Yaʿfur.
