16
Then he abandoned that practice and forbade it.
“And he, peace and blessings be upon him, used to place his palms on his knees” (1).
“And he would instruct them to do likewise” (2).
He also gave the same instruction to the man who prayed badly—as noted earlier.
Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad also transmitted the report from his father alone, in an abridged form; Ahmad recorded it (1/426). Ahmad likewise narrated it from Alqama, as will be cited below.
Al-Hazimi said: “The scholars have disagreed on this matter. A number of them acted upon this hadith—among them: Abd Allah ibn Masud, al-Aswad ibn Yazid, Abu Ubayda ibn Abd Allah ibn Masud, and Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad. The rest of the scholars from the Companions, the Successors, and those who came after them opposed that view. They held that the practice mentioned in the hadith was legislated at the beginning of Islam but was later abrogated, and the abrogation did not reach Ibn Masud; the people of Madina, however, learned of it, so they narrated the abrogating report and followed it. Some scholars therefore concluded that the people of Madina were better informed about what was abrogated and what remained in force than those who left the city and settled elsewhere.”
I add: Just as the sunnah of placing the hands on the knees during bowing escaped Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him), so too did the sunnah of raising the hands at points other than the opening takbir, as shown earlier. How could this be unknown to him when he was one of the early Companions who accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ both on journeys and at home? It is one of the curiosities for which we can offer no explanation other than his being a human who could make mistakes and forget. Allah knows best the true circumstances.
(1 & 2) Both reports derive from Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) and reach us through several lines of transmission.
First chain: from Abd Allah ibn Idris, from Asim ibn Kulayb, from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad, who said: “Alqama narrated to us from Abd Allah who said…"
