that has come by way of revelation or the Sunnah. He added:
"Most partisans know of the Quran and Sunnah only what Allah allows them to know; instead, they cling to weak hadiths, unsound opinions, or anecdotes ascribed to certain scholars and shaykhs—accounts that may be true or may be false, and even if true, their authors are not infallible. They rely on an unverified report from a fallible person while neglecting the verified transmission from the infallible one—what trustworthy scholars have related and recorded in the sound compilations from the Prophet ﷺ. Those transmitters are unanimously deemed reliable by the imams of the religion, and the one from whom they transmit is protected from error; he does not speak from his own desire—‘it is nothing but revelation sent down.’ Allah has required all people to obey and follow him. He says: ‘But no, by your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you judge in their disputes, then find no discomfort in themselves regarding your decision and submit in full submission’ (Q 4:65), and He says: ‘Let those who oppose his command beware, lest a trial afflict them or a painful punishment befall them’ (Q 24:63)."
I have deliberately cited Hanafi scholars who considered raising the hands (during prayer) to be legally prescribed in order to caution the zealots among our own teachers and their followers and to let them realize that some of our scholars do in fact hold this view. Such people—who confine all knowledge and jurisprudence to a few well-known books—have been numerous in every age. One of them even told me: "All our knowledge, we Hanafis, is limited to just two books: Tahaṭṭawi’s marginal notes on Maraqi al-Falah and Ibn Abidin’s marginal notes on the Durr!" Because their reading stops there, you will hardly find among them anyone who knows anything beyond what those works contain. Indeed, many of them regard reading and studying hadith literature as a waste of time; one shaykh even admitted to me, "Hadith scholarship is the occupation of paupers!" There is no power and no might except with Allah.
Some have taken their fanaticism in this issue so far that they fabricated a lie against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, alleging that he said:
