(9) From Abu Hurayrah. It has already been cited under “the opening takbir” (p. 193). The isnad is weak, yet it has supporting chains that strengthen it; I listed them under “raising the hands when descending to prostration,” so refer to that discussion. (10) From Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him): “I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah, and he used to raise his hands when he began the prayer, when he bowed, and when he lifted his head from bowing.” Al-Bayhaqi records it (2/73) and remarks: “Its narrators are trustworthy.” Ibn al-Turkumani agrees in al-Muntaqa. These make ten Companions. Added to them are another ten—or perhaps nine—named in Abu Humayd’s fourth hadith; a further group of Companions concurred, but we have not traced their reports because each contains some weakness. Nothing sound contradicts these traditions except the report of Abd Allah b. Masud (may Allah be pleased with him): “Shall I not lead you in the prayer of the Messenger of Allah?” Alqamah said: “He then prayed and did not raise his hands except the first time.” It is narrated by Ahmad (1/388); likewise by Abu Dawud (1/120), al-Tirmidhi (2/40), al-Nasa’i (1/158), al-Tahawi (1/132), al-Bayhaqi (2/78), and Ibn Hazm in al-Muhalla (4/87) through several routes from Wakiʿ: Sufyan narrated to us, from Asim b. Kulayb, from Abd al-Rahman b. al-Aswad, from Alqamah, from him.
