Then al-Bukhari says in his monograph: “Waki added the report narrated by al-Umari, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet: he used to raise his hands when he bowed and when he prostrated.” Al-Bukhari comments: “The reliably transmitted version is that of Ubayd Allah, Ayyub, Malik, Ibn Jurayj, and a number of scholars from the Hijaz and Iraq, all from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, mentioning the raising of the hands at the bowing posture and when lifting the head after bowing. Even if the hadith of al-Umari from Nafi from Ibn Umar were sound, it would not conflict with the first one; if it were established, we would practice both reports. This is not a case of contradictory evidence, for it simply contains an additional act, and an additional detail is acceptable once it is proven.” I say: this additional clause is in fact sound and well-established through chains other than this al-Umari, who is weak because of poor memory. Those chains will be cited in their proper place, God willing. Second: the narration of Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, which reaches us by two routes. 1. Via Abu Qilabah from him, with wording similar to the Ibn Umar report in the version of Hammad. Recorded by Bukhari (2:175), Muslim, and others. Its text has already been quoted under “raising the hands at the opening takbir.” 2. Via Nasr ibn Asim from him; recorded by Muslim and others, and likewise cited earlier. It is also transmitted by al-Tayalisi (no. 176). Third: the narration of Wail ibn Hujr; recorded by Muslim and others. Its wording has already been given there, along with its supporting chains.
