b. The second route: Ubayd Allah – Nafi – Ibn Umar: “Whenever Ibn Umar entered the prayer he would pronounce the opening takbir and raise his hands; when he bowed he raised his hands; when he said, ‘Sami Allahu liman hamidah’ he raised his hands; and when he rose after the two rakʿas he raised his hands.” Ibn Umar traced this practice back to the Prophet. Reported by Bukhari, Sahih, 2:176, and in his monograph Rafʿ al-Yadayn, no. 16; Abu Dawud, 1:118; and al-Bayhaqi, 2:136. • ʿAbd Allah al-ʿUmari, known as al-Mukabbir, also narrated it from Nafiʿ; Bukhari, no. 20. • Ayyub narrated it from Abu Tamimah; Bukhari, no. 17; al-Bayhaqi, 2:24, 70; Ahmad, 2:100, through Hammad ibn Salamah. In Bukhari’s Sahih the wording is cited without the clause “and when he rose after the two rakʿas.” • Musa ibn ʿUqbah transmitted it; al-Bayhaqi, 2:70–71, and Bukhari cites it in suspended form. • Salih ibn Kaysan reported it; Ahmad, 2:132; its wording was quoted earlier (p. 193). 3. The third route: Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar – Shuʿbah – al-Hakam: Al-Hakam said, “I saw Tawus, when he began the prayer, raise his hands, when he bowed, and when he lifted his head from bowing. One of his companions told me that he related this from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet.” Reported by Ahmad, 2:44. All of its transmitters are those accepted by Bukhari and Muslim except al-Hakam’s unnamed teacher. Al-Bayhaqi also recorded it, 2:74, through Adam ibn Abi Iyas, who said that Shuʿbah narrated it with the wording: “from Ibn Umar, from ʿUmar, from the Prophet.”
