It was transmitted by a number of Companions. We shall first cite the reports whose chains are sound and then summarize the jurists’ opinions on the matter.
1. Abd Allah ibn Umar. Several isnads lead back to him:
a. The route of al-Zuhri – Salim ibn Abd Allah – Abd Allah ibn Umar:
“The Messenger of Allah used to raise his hands level with his shoulders when he opened the prayer, when he pronounced the takbir for bowing, and when he lifted his head from bowing he would raise them the same way …” A similar wording has already been quoted under “Raising the hands at the opening takbir” (p. 193).
Reported by Bukhari, Sahih, 2:174–176, and in his monograph Raf al-Yadayn, pp. 5, 7, 16, 20; Muslim, 2:6–7; Abu Dawud, 1:114–115; al-Nasa i, 1:140, 158, 161, 162, 165; al-Tirmidhi, 2:35 (who said: “hasan sahih”); al-Darimi, 2:285; Ibn Majah, 1:281; Malik, 1:97 (and through him Muhammad, 87); al-Daraqutni, 107–108; al-Tahawi, 1:131; al-Bayhaqi, 2:23, 26, 69, 83; Ahmad, 2:8, 18, 47, 62, 147; and al-Tabarani, al-Saghir, p. 240, through various chains originating with him.
Jabr al-Ju fi followed Salim in this report; see al-Tahawi and Ahmad, 2:45 (“I heard Salim ibn Abd Allah relate it in abbreviated form”).
An additional wording found in Ahmad, 2:133–134, Abu Dawud, and al-Daraqutni (in his version from al-Zuhri) states: “He would raise them in every rak a and at every takbir uttered before bowing until his prayer was completed.” The chain of this wording satisfies the criteria of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).
