Seeking refuge and light spitting in the prayer to repel satanic whispers

‘Uthmān ibn Abī al-‘Āṣ (1), may Allah be pleased with him, said to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him:
“O Messenger of Allah, Satan has interposed (2) himself between me and my prayer and my recitation, confusing (3) them for me.”
The Messenger of Allah replied, “That is a devil called Khanzab (4). Whenever you sense him, seek Allah’s protection from him and spit lightly (5) to your left three times.”
He said, “I did that, and Allah removed him from me.”

(1) This phrase belongs to the same hadith. It is recorded by Muslim (7/21); al-Tahawi, Mushkil al-Athar (1/160); al-Hakim (4/219), who declared it sahih; al-Tabarani in al-Kabir; and Ahmad (4/216), all through several chains from Sa id al-Jariri, from Abu al-Ala Yazid b. Abd Allah b. al-Shikhkhir, from the Prophet. Al-Nawawi comments in his Sharh Muslim: “This hadith recommends seeking refuge from Shaytan when he prompts whispers, together with spitting lightly to the left three times.” (2) Meaning: he spoiled my prayer, deprived me of its sweetness, and prevented me from finding the calm needed for khushu (humble concentration). (3) With a fathah on the first letter and a kasrah on the third; that is, he confuses the prayer for me and makes me doubtful about it. (4) Spelt with a dotted kha carrying a kasrah, followed by a silent nun, then a zay that may be read with either kasrah or fathah. (5) Derived from at-tafl (light spitting). Ibn al-Athir explains in al-Nihaya: “It is a blowing accompanied by a trace of saliva, and is more substantial than an-nafth (dry blowing).”
