“he is not one of us.” I say: the correct wording is the first one. After quoting the hadith, al-Khatib writes:
“Abu Bakr al-Naysaburi said: The wording given by Abu Asim—‘He is not one of us who does not chant the Quran’—is a mistake on Abu Asim’s part, for the majority of those who received the report from him cite it with the former wording.” In other words, with the wording “ma adhina Allah…” (“Allah has not granted permission…”). Al-Khatib adds:
“This hadith was transmitted by Abd al-Razzaq b. Hammam and Hajjaj b. Muhammad from Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama. It was also reported by al-Awzai, Amr b. al-Harith, Muhammad b. al-Walid al-Zubaydi, Shuayb b. Abi Hamza, Maʿmar b. Rashid, Muʿawiya b. Yahya al-Sadafi, and al-Walid b. Muhammad al-Mawqari, all from al-Zuhri, and they are unanimous—including Ibn Jurayj—that the wording is: ‘ma adhina Allah…,’ etc.
As for the wording cited by Abu Asim, it is found only in the route of Ibn Abi Mulayka, from Ibn Nahik, from Saʿd b. Abi Waqqas, from the Prophet.”
I add: that is the very hadith mentioned immediately before this one (see p. 580; the remainder of the discussion is on p. 588).
(1) Note: Ibn al-Athir, in Jamiʿ al-Usul, attributes Abu Dawud’s version to al-Bukhari through the narration of Abu Hurayra. Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qadir al-Arnaʾut and his collaborators remark (2/457): “Al-Albani (!) has gone far afield in his book The Prophet’s Prayer (p. 106), for he attributed it to Abu Dawud.” Their implication is that it is improper scholarly practice to cite a hadith from any source other than the two Sahihs when one of them has recorded it. My reply: their basic point is sound—whatever motive they may have had—but they should know that
