and also Ahmad (2/450), who reproduces Yahya’s wording exactly.
As for the transmission of Muhammad b. Ibrahim al-Taymi, it is reported by al-Bukhari (13/444–445)—as well as in his tract Afal al-Ibad—by Muslim, Abu Dawud (1/231–232), al-Nasa’i, Ibn Mundah, and al-Bayhaqi. In this version the first supplementary phrase appears in its original wording, and the final supplementary phrase is likewise present.
The report of Amr b. Dinar was recorded by Ibn Abi Dawud and by al-Tahawi (cited in Fath, 9/58); it carries the first supplementary phrase.
(Note) Al-Tabarani’s narration in al-Awsat, traced back to Jabir with the wording: “inna-llaha lam ya’dhan li-mutarannim bi-l-Quran” (“Allah has not granted permission to a chanter of the Quran”), is unreliable, for its chain contains Sulayman b. Dawud al-Shadhakuni, a confirmed liar according to al-Haythami (Majma, 7/170).
(Caution) Al-Bukhari (13/429–430), al-Tahawi (2/129), and likewise al-Khatib in his Tarikh (1/394–395) narrate—through the route of Abu Asim, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurayra—the wording: “laysa minna man lam yataghanna bi-l-Quran” (“He is not one of us who does not chant the Quran”). Some transmitters add: “yajharu bihi” (“and recite it aloud”).
The Musnad (2/285) also records it, through Abd al-Razzaq and Muhammad b. Bakr, both reporting from Ibn Jurayj with the wording: “lam ya’dhan Allah li-shay’in …” (“Allah has not permitted anything …”), and the same wording is supplied by other students of Ibn Jurayj.
Al-Hafiz (13/429) comments: “It is one and the same hadith; the difference is that some narrate it with the expression ma adhina Allah, while others transmit it with the wording …”
