and likewise in (1/81 = no. 173/407); also in al-Bayhaqi (2/54) and in Ahmad (2/271, 285) through several chains from him. From this same route Ibn Jarir al-Tabari also recorded it, and there the first supplementary phrase appears in both of its wordings, as noted in Fath (9/58). Its isnad is sound, as al-Mundhiri states in al-Targhib (2/415). In one version al-Bukhari—and, at the close of the report, al-Darimi and Ahmad—add: “A companion of his said, meaning: ‘he recites it aloud.’” Al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) commented: “The pronoun ‘his’ refers to Abu Salama, and the ‘companion’ is Abd al-Hamid b. Abd al-Rahman b. Zayd b. al-Khattab. Al-Zubaydi clarified this from Ibn Shihab in this hadith. Ibn Abi Yahya al-Dhuhli reproduced it in al-Zuhriyyat with the wording: ‘ma adhina Allahu bi-shay’in ma adhina li-nabiyyin yataghanna bi-l-Quran.’ Ibn Shihab added: Abd al-Hamid b. Abd al-Rahman informed me, on the authority of Abu Salama, that ‘yataghanna bi-l-Quran’ means ‘he recites it aloud (yajharu bihi).’ Hence it seems Ibn Shihab did not hear this gloss directly from Abu Salama but from Abd al-Hamid on his behalf.” I add: this supplementary sentence is firmly established in transmissions other than that of al-Zuhri from Abu Salama, as will be shown below. As for the version of Yahya b. Abi Kathir, Muslim records it with the wording ka-idhnih instead of ma adhina, and it likewise contains the second supplementary phrase in its primary form. Regarding the version of Muhammad b. Amr, it is found in Muslim, al-Darimi (1/349), and Ibn— (*) and in Ibn Mundah’s al-Tawhid, through his chain, with the wording idhnah.
