he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering the nightly *subhah* (supererogatory prayer) while travelling, on the back of his mount, facing whichever way it turned. This wording is found in Ahmad (3/344). Third: Anas b. Sirin related: “We went out to greet Anas when he returned from Syria and met him at Ayn al-Tamr. I saw him praying on a donkey with his face to this side—i.e., to the left of the qiblah. I said, ‘I have seen you praying not toward the qiblah!’ He replied, ‘Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do so, I would never have done it.’” Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim, al-Bayhaqi (2/5), and Ahmad (3/204). Ahmad also records an abridged version (3/126): “He used to pray on his she-camel, performing voluntary prayers while travelling, without facing the qiblah.” Fourth: From Uthman b. Abd Allah b. Suraqah, from Jabir b. Abd Allah: “I saw the Prophet ﷺ during the expedition of Anmar praying on his riding-animal, facing east, performing a voluntary prayer.” Reported by al-Bukhari (7/346), al-Shafi‘i (1/84), al-Bayhaqi (2/4), and Ahmad (3/300) through Ibn Abi Dhiʾb.
