He is not one of us who fails to recite the Quran with a melodious intonation. (1)
(1) The hadith is transmitted from Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas.
It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/231); al-Bayhaqi (p. 54) citing him; al-Darimi (2/471); Ibn Nasr (p. 55); al-Tahawi in al-Mushkil (2/127–128); al-Hakim (1/569); al-Tayalisi (p. 28); and Ahmad (1/172, 175, 179) through several chains from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Mulaykah, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn Abi Nahik, from Saʿd with the same wording. Al-Hakim declared it sahih, and al-Dhahabi concurred, a judgment that is sound. Abu ʿAwana also graded it sahih, as noted in Fath (9/57).
Al-Hakim (1/570) additionally reported it via ʿAmr ibn al-Harith, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, who related that some people visited Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas and asked him about the Quran. Saʿd replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah say …,” and then cited the hadith. Al-Hakim remarked: “This version shows that Ibn Abi Mulaykah did not receive it from only one transmitter; he heard it from several narrators who reported from Saʿd.”
I add: among those from whom Ibn Abi Mulaykah heard it is ʿUbayd Allah ibn Abi Yazid, who said: “Abu Lubabah passed by us, so we followed him until he entered his house; we went in and found a man in a shabby dwelling, poorly dressed, and I heard him say …” with the hadith. Abu Dawud, and likewise al-Tahawi (2/129), recorded it through the chain of ʿAbd al-Jabbar ibn al-Ward, who said: “I heard Ibn Abi Mulaykah say that ʿUbayd Allah ibn Abi Yazid said …” This wording contains an additional passage: “He said: …”
