Al-Tabarani also recorded the report, and through his version Abu Nuaym (4/19) transmitted it via Ibn Lahiʿa, from ʿAmr b. Dinar, from Tawus, with the wording: “The person who recites the Quran best is the one who, when he recites it, becomes sorrowful.” Al-Haythami remarks in Majmaʿ al-Zawaid (7/170): “Ibn Lahiʿa’s hadith is classed as hasan, though he does have some weakness.”
There is a second route from Ibn ʿAbbas. Abu Nuaym (3/317) said: “Muhammad b. Ahmad b. al-Hasan told us; ʿAbbas b. Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Washshaʾ told us; Ahmad b. ʿUmar al-Wakiʿi told us; Qabisah told us; Sufyan narrated from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAtaʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbas with wording similar to Misʿar’s mursal version.” He then commented: “This is a rare report in which al-Thawri transmits from Ibn Jurayj through ʿAtaʾ; Ahmad alone relates it from Qabisah.”
I add: this Ahmad is reliable—one of Muslim’s teachers—and everyone above him is unanimously accepted.
Al-Maqdisi also included the hadith in al-Mukhtarah through Abu Nuaym.
The report has additional supporting chains:
• One comes from Ibrahim b. Ismaʿil b. Mujammaʿ, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, marfuʿ, with the wording cited in the main text. Al-Haythami notes in al-Zawaid: “Its isnad is weak because this Ibrahim b. Ismaʿil is weak,” and al-Hafiz al-Iraqi likewise says (1/257), “Its chain is weak.”
• Another comes from Ibn ʿUmar, and it has two paths. The first: Ibn Nasr (no. 55) said, “Muhammad b. Yahya related to us; ʿUmar b. ʿUmar related to us; Marzuq informed us …”
