“and he would make his prostration lower than his bowing.”
Another wording states: “While returning from Mecca to Madinah he would pray on his mount, facing whichever direction it turned,” and he added, “It was about this that the verse was revealed: ‘Fa-aynama tuwallu fa-thamma wajhu Allah’ (So wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah, 2:115).”
Reported by Muslim; al-Nasa’i; al-Tirmidhi (2/159, Bulaq ed.)—who declared it “hasan sahih”; al-Bayhaqi (2/4); and Ahmad (2/20) through Abd al-Malik b. Abi Sulayman, from Sa id b. Jubayr, from him.
In another chain, through Sa id b. Yasar, he said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying on a donkey while heading toward Khaybar.”
Reported by Muslim; Malik (1/365); al-Shafi i; Abu Dawud; al-Nasa’i (1/121)—who also has a corroborating report from Anas with a sound chain, thereby removing the hadith from the category of shadh (isolated), contrary to the criticism of al-Nawawi in his Sharh Muslim and the hint of Ibn al-Qayyim (1/187); we have refuted them at length in the Ta liqat—; al-Bayhaqi; al-Tayalisi (255); and Ahmad (2/49, 57, 75, 83). One of Ahmad’s versions adds: “facing eastward, performing a voluntary prayer.” Its chain is sound.
2. The hadith of Amir b. Rabi ah: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on his riding-animal performing tasbih (supererogatory prayer), signaling with his head toward whichever direction he faced; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not do this in the obligatory prayers.”
Reported by al-Bukhari (2/460); al-Darimi (1/356); al-Bayhaqi (2/7); and Ahmad (3/446). Muslim (2/150) narrates it in the wording:
