and Abu Maryam is judged unreliable (matruk). A fourth route exists: al-Darimi recorded it, and al-Hakim reproduced it from al-Darimi’s version, through Zadhan Abu ‘Amr from al-Bara’, with the wording, “Beautify…,” the remainder being identical but with an additional clause. Its chain is sound; every transmitter is a reliable narrator found in Muslim’s Sahih. The tradition also has corroborating reports: • From Abu Hurayrah: al-Bukhari cites it in suspended form in Af‘al al-‘Ibad (p. 80), through Suhayl, from his father, from him; Ibn Hibban included it in his Sahih. • From Ibn ‘Abbas: al-Tabarani transmitted it through two isnads. One of them contains ‘Abd Allah ibn Khirash; Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy but said, “he may err,” and al-Bukhari and others likewise rated him reliable, the rest of the chain being narrators of the Sahih, as stated in Majma‘ al-Zawaid (7/170). Al-Taqrib, however, labels Ibn Khirash “weak.” Al-Fath notes: “al-Daraqutni brought it in al-Afrad with a good chain.” • From ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf: al-Bazzar related it with a weak isnad. • From Ibn Mas‘ud: reported by Ibn Nasr, Abu Nu‘aym in Hilyat al-Awliya’ (4/236), and al-Tabarani through Sa‘id ibn Zarbi, who said: “Khalid narrated to us, from Ibrahim, from ‘Alqama, who said:”
