In another wording preserved by Ahmad (3/131, 192, 289): “He would prolong his voice at length.” Al-Ismaʿili, Abu Nuʿaym, and Ibn Abi Dawud transmit the same report; one version of Ibn Abi Dawud reads: “He would prolong his recitation.” Ibn Hajar notes in Fath al-Bari that only Jarir b. Hazim and Hammam b. Yahya relate this hadith from Qatadah. Al-Bukhari adds: “He then recited: Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful), drawing out Bismillah, drawing out al-Rahman, and drawing out al-Rahim.” Al-Hafiz further says: “Ibn Abi Dawud, through Qutbah b. Malik, reports: I heard the Messenger of Allah recite Surah Qaf in the dawn prayer; when he reached the words laha talʿun nadid, he prolonged nadid. This is a reliable corroboration for the report of Anas, and its basic form is found in Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, and al-Nasaʾi from Qutbah himself.” I add: the earlier citation of the Fajr recitation appeared without the clause “and he prolonged nadid.” Al-Bukhari also records it in Afʿal al-ʿIbad (81) with the wording “he lengthened his voice with it,” and its chain is sound by the standards of both al-Bukhari and Muslim.
