and when he—peace and blessings be upon him—was travelling he would perform the voluntary prayers on his mount, and he would even offer the witr on it no matter which way it was facing, east or west (*). Regarding this, the Almighty revealed: “So wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah” (al-Baqarah 2:115). He would also bow and prostrate on his mount, signalling the movements with a tilt of his head, making the prostration lower than the bowing. (1)
(*) Added from the printed edition of Sifat al-Salah.
(1) This ruling is attested by several hadiths:
The first: the report of Abdullah b. Umar who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform supererogatory prayers on his riding-animal, facing whatever direction it was turned, and he would also perform witr on it, though he did not perform the obligatory prayers on it.”
Reported by al-Bukhari (2/460); Muslim (2/150); Abu Dawud (1/190–191); al-Nasa’i (1/85, 122); al-Tahawi (1/249); and al-Bayhaqi (2/491) through Ibn Shihab, from Salim, from him.
Another wording states: “He would pray on his mount while travelling wherever it turned with him.”
Reported by al-Bukhari (2/459); Malik (1/165); al-Shafi‘i (1/84) on his authority; likewise by Muslim, al-Nasa’i, al-Tirmidhi (2/183), al-Bayhaqi, al-Tayalisi (256), and Ahmad (2/7, 38, 44, 46, 56, 66, 72, 75, 81) through various chains.
Al-Bukhari adds in one narration (2/392): “He would gesture with slight inclinations.”
The same is found in a narration of Ahmad (3/73), which further adds:
