All of these supporting transmissions possess sound chains. The concurrence of these four trustworthy narrators—together with a fifth, al-Haytham ibn Ayyub—on affirming the addition “and another surah” in the hadith proves its authenticity and refutes al-Bayhaqi’s statement: “The mention of a surah in it is not reliably preserved.” For this reason Ibn al-Turkmani rejected al-Bayhaqi’s view in al-Jawhar al-Naqi by adducing the Nasai version. Al-Nawawi likewise recorded the wording close to that of al-Nasai in al-Majmuʿ (5/234), remarking, “Abu Ya‘la al-Mawsili transmitted it in his Musnad, and its chain is sound,” a judgment endorsed by Ibn Hajar in al-Talkhis (5/165). Nor is this the only route: the same addition is also narrated from Ibn Abbas through Zayd ibn Talhah al-Taymi, who said, “I heard Ibn Abbas …,” and he reported the hadith with the extra phrase. ——— (*) Instead of the bracketed phrase above, the original text read: “Ibrahim ibn Hamza al-Madani—as al-Bayhaqi (4/38) names him—he too is trustworthy and is cited by al-Bukhari.
