At other times he would recite in both rakʿahs: Qāf. wal-Qur’ān al-Majīd ("Qāf. By the Glorious Qur’an") (50:45), and Iqtarabati al-sāʿah ("The Hour has drawn near") (54:55). (1)
Among the supporting narrations is that of Anas b. Malik.
Al-Tayalisi records it (no. 272): ‘Imarah b. Zadhan said, “We were with Thabit [al-Bunani] while an elderly man was present. We spoke about what is recited in the two ‘Id prayers. The elderly man said, ‘I accompanied Anas b. Malik to the zawiya on an ‘Id day, and a freed slave of theirs led the prayer. He recited Sabbi hisma rabbika al-a‘la (Surah 87, ‘Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High’) and Al-layl idha yaghsha (Surah 92, ‘By the night when it envelops’).’ Anas remarked, ‘He has recited the two surahs that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite on ‘Id.’”
This chain is weak because the unnamed shaykh is unknown. ‘Imarah b. Zadhan is “reliable but prone to many mistakes,” as noted in al-Taqrib.
Al-Shawkani (3/251) cites a similar report from Ibn Abi Shaybah’s Musannaf, except that it has Hal ataka hadith al-ghashiyah (Surah 88, ‘Has there come to you the story of the Overwhelming?’) in place of Al-layl idha yaghsha.
(1) Another related hadith is that of Abu Waqid al-Laythi. ‘Ubayd Allah b. ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Utbah b. Mas‘ud reports that ‘Umar b. al-Khattab asked Abu Waqid al-Laythi: “What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite in the prayers of al-Adha and al-Fitr?” He replied: “He would recite Qaf. wal-Qur’an al-majid (Surah 50) and Iqtarabati al-sa‘ah wan-shaqq al-qamar (Surah 54).”
It is related by Malik (1/191), and through him by Muslim (3/21), Muhammad (no. 137), Abu Dawud (1/179–180), Tirmidhi (2/415), al-Tahawi (1/240), al-Daraqutni (p. 180), and Ahmad (5/217–218), all via Malik from Damrah b. Sa‘id al-Mazani from Abu Waqid.
