“I heard the Messenger of Allah recite the two surahs in the Friday prayer.” Muslim (3/15) records it with this wording, as do Abu Dawud (1/175‒176), Tirmidhi (2/396‒397)—who judged it hasan sahih—and Ibn Majah (1/345), all through Jaʿfar b. Muhammad from his father. Ibn Majah adds: “He recited Surah al-Jumuʿah in the first rakʿah and, in the second, Surah Idha jaʾaka al-Munafiqun,” a variant also found in Muslim. Al-Tahawi (1/240) transmits only the portion attributed directly to the Prophet. Al-Tabarani narrates it in al-Awsat with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah used to recite in the Friday prayer Surah al-Jumuʿah, thereby urging the believers, and in the second Surah al-Munafiqun, thereby scolding the hypocrites.” Al-Haythami (2/191) comments: “Its chain is hasan; Muhammad b. ʿAmmar—al-Waziʿi—and his teacher ʿAbd al-Samad are among the people of opinion, but Ibn Hibban declared both reliable.” I have also documented it in Irwaʾ al-Ghalil (no. 345). The second hadith, from Ibn ʿAbbas, states that the Prophet used to recite in the Friday dawn prayer “Alif Lam Mim Tanzil” (Surah al-Sajdah) and “Hal ata ʿala al-Insan” (Surah al-Insan), and that in the Friday congregational prayer he would recite Surah al-Jumuʿah and Surah al-Munafiqun. Muslim (3/16), Abu Dawud (1/169), Nasai (1/209‒210), Tahawi (1/240), Tayalisi (343), and Ahmad (1/340, 354) all transmit it through Mukhawwal b. Rashid, from Muslim al-Batin, from Saʿid b. Jubayr, from him.
