Al-Nasai recorded it (1/251) through the chain of Hammad ibn Salamah, from Asim al-Aḥwal, from him; the isnad is sound. Ahmad also transmitted it (4/419) through Thabit—who said, “ʽAsim narrated to us”—with similar wording. This chain too is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim. (1) It is related from Abu Umamah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah used to perform witr with nine rakʿahs. When he became heavier and his body grew larger, he performed witr with seven, then prayed two rakʿahs while seated, reciting in them *Idha zulzilati* (When the earth is shaken, 99) and *Qul ya ayyuha al-kafirun* (Say: O unbelievers, 109).” Ahmad narrated it (5/269), Ibn Nasr (pp. 82, 130), and al-Tahawi (1/171) through ʽImarah ibn Zadhan—who said, “Abu Ghalib related to us”—from him. Ahmad also recorded it (5/260) through ʽAbd al-ʽAziz ibn Suhayb, and al-Tahawi (1/202) through ʽAbd al-Warith (i.e., Ibn Saʿid); both transmitters narrate from Abu Ghalib with the wording: “He would pray the two rakʿahs after the witr while seated, reciting in them …,” and so forth. This chain is hasan (reliable). It is corroborated by a report from Anas, recorded by Ibn Nasr (p. 82) and al-Daraqutni (pp. 178–79) through Baqiyyah, from ʽUtbah ibn Abi Hakim, from Qatadah, from him.
