and also by al-Bayhaqi (2/437) through the chain of Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Qattan, who said: “ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; he was informed by Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid from his father, from Abu Hurayra.” In this version the requirement to face the qibla is not mentioned, and, as you can see, the sanad contains the extra link “from his father.” Al-Bukhari likewise recorded it (2/191, 219, 222), as did Muslim and al-Bayhaqi (2/37, 62, 372) in other transmissions. Al-Tirmidhi remarked, “It is more authentic than the narration of Ibn Numayr.” Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari inclined to accepting both lines of transmission as sound, and this appears to be correct, God willing. The hadith also has a sound corroborating report from Rifaʿa ibn Rafiʿ al-Badri. It is found in al-Bukhari’s Juzʾ al-Qiraʾa (pp. 11–12), al-Nasaʾi (1/194), and al-Hakim (1/242) through the chain of Dawud ibn Qays; in al-Bukhari and al-Nasaʾi (nos. 161, 193), al-Shafiʿi’s al-Umm (1/88), al-Bayhaqi (2/372), and Ahmad (4/340) through Muhammad ibn ʿAjlan; and in Abu Dawud (1/137) through Muhammad ibn ʿAmr. All three routes go back to ʿAli ibn Yahya ibn Khallad ibn Rafiʿ ibn Malik al-Ansari, who said, “My father told me from an uncle of his who fought at Badr”—while Muhammad ibn ʿAmr stated “from Rifaʿa ibn Rafiʿ”—relating the same incident. This chain is authentic; its transmitters are those relied upon by al-Bukhari. In the Musnad (4/340) it is also reported via Muhammad ibn ʿAmr from ʿAli ibn Yahya directly from Rifaʿa, omitting the link “from his father,” and al-Bayhaqi cites it in the same form. Al-Bayhaqi then records it (2/374) through the route of Abu Dawud, and al-Tahawi (1/232) narrates it from Sharik ibn Abi Namir, likewise without mentioning the father. Al-Bayhaqi adds:
