Ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Saʿsaʿah al-Ansari—­from his father—­from Abu Saʿid. This chain is sound, and al-Darqutni also records it, as noted in Fath al-Bari (9/49). Malik transmits it (1/211), and through Malik the same report is found in al-Bukhari (9/48–49; 13/303), Abu Dawud (1/230), al-Nasaʾi (1/155), al-Tahawi, Mushkil al-Athar (2/81–82), and Ahmad (3/35); all of them give the narration with the first additional wording. The second additional wording occurs only in the versions of al-Bukhari and al-Tahawi. Ahmad (3/15) also relates it through another route: Ibn Lahiʿa—from al-Harith ibn Yazid—from Abu al-Haytham—from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, who said: “Qatadah ibn al-Nuʿman spent the whole night reciting …,” and so on. This chain is weak. (1) Numerous hadiths address this issue: First: the report of Ibn ʿAbbas. It is recorded by al-Nasaʾi (1/249), al-Tirmidhi (2/325–326), al-Darimi (1/372–373), Ibn Majah (1/357), Ibn Nasr (p. 121), al-Tahawi (1/170), Ahmad (1/299–300, 316, 372), and al-Tabarani in both al-Saghir (p. 163) and al-Kabir, all of them through Abu Ishaq—from Saʿid ibn Jubayr—from Ibn ʿAbbas with a similar wording.
