And a man once said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, I have a neighbour who stands in prayer at night and recites nothing except ‘Say: He is Allah, the One’ (112:4), repeating it over and over, adding nothing else—almost as though he considers it insignificant!” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “By the One in whose hand is my soul, it is equal to one-third of the Qur’an.” (1)
All of the transmitters are trustworthy and belong to the class of narrators used by Muslim, except for Ismail ibn Muslim al-Naji. Al-Haythami states (2/273): “I have found no biographical entry for him.” I add: Ibn Hajar does not list him in Taʿjil, and it is possible that he is actually Ismail ibn Muslim al-Abdi who appears in the chain cited by al-Tirmidhi; he narrates it from al-Naji—namely, Abu al-Mutawakkil—who narrates from Abu Nadra from Abu Saʿid. On that reading, the particle “from (an)” has dropped out between Ismail ibn Muslim and al-Naji. This is supported by the fact that those who record the disciples of this al-Naji—i.e., Ali ibn Dawud, Abu al-Mutawakkil—include Ismail ibn Muslim al-Abdi, who belongs to the generation of Zayd ibn Hubab’s teachers. In the Musnad (3/48) there is also a report through Ismail ibn Muslim: “Ismail narrated to us: Abu al-Mutawakkil from Abu Saʿid.” It is, however, well known that Abu al-Mutawakkil transmits directly from Abu Saʿid, as in this chain, and to my knowledge no one has stated that he transmits from him via Abu Nadra; the two are contemporaries, although in principle one contemporary could narrate from another. If this identification is correct, the hadith is sound according to Muslim’s criterion. Allah knows best.
(1) This refers to the hadith of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri in which a man said… and so on. Ahmad relates it (3/43): “Ishaq—that is, Ibn Isa—narrated to us; Malik narrated to us from Abd al-Rahman …”
