that he kept watch over the Messenger ﷺ the whole night, until it was… and so on. Al-Tirmidhi remarks: “Sound and good (hasan sahih).”
I add: all the transmitters are those cited by the two Shaykhs, except ʿAbd Allah b. Khabbab, who is reliable. Al-Nasaʾi gives the report under the heading “Chapter: Reviving the Night (with Prayer).”
It is corroborated by a report of Muʿadh b. Jabal : “One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer and made it unusually long. When he finished we (or they) said: ‘Messenger of Allah, you lengthened the prayer today.’ He replied: ‘I performed a prayer of hope and fear…,’” and the remainder is similar.
Ibn Majah (2/464) and Ahmad (5/240) narrate it through al-Aʿmash → Rajaʾ al-Ansari → ʿAbd Allah b. Shaddad b. al-Had → Muʿadh. The chain is sound; its men are trustworthy, as the Zawaʾid state, though some have questioned it, for Rajaʾ is only narrated from by al-Aʿmash, as al-Dhahabi notes. In al-Taqrib he is graded “maqbul” (acceptable).
Ahmad (5/248) also transmits it through Ismaʿil—i.e. Ibn ʿUlayya—→ Ayyub → Abu Qilaba, who said: “I was informed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was one night engaged in prayer…,” with wording similar to the previous. This isnad consists of narrators employed by the six books, yet it is mursal.
Muslim (8/171), Abu Dawud (2/202), al-Tirmidhi (2/27), and Ahmad (5/278, 284) link the chain, all of them reporting from Hammad b. Zayd → Ayyub → Abu Qilaba → Abu Asmaʿ →
