Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

the very scourge with which He destroyed the nations before us (in another wording: that He not destroy my community by a famine(1)); and He granted me that. I then asked my Lord not to allow an enemy from outside ourselves to prevail over us, and He granted me that as well. Finally, I asked my Lord not to let us be split into rival factions, but He withheld that from me(2).

(1) That is: universally, as in the hadith of Thawban. Al-Nawawi explains: “Meaning that Allah will not destroy them with a drought that engulfs them all; should a drought occur, it will be confined to a small area relative to the rest of the Muslim lands. All praise and thanks belong to Allah for every blessing.” The phrase “that He will not give power over us” means over his ummah (community). “Those other than us” refers to the factions of unbelief, i.e., that they will not be enabled to wipe the Muslims out, as in Thawban’s wording: “that He not let loose against them an enemy other than themselves who would annihilate their core,” that is, their community and very root. The verb “yalbisana” (with a kasra on the b) means: that He not entangle us in the confusion of warfare. “Shiyaan” denotes divergent factions fighting and killing one another. The clause “but He withheld it from me,” al-Sindi comments, shows that a supplication is not invariably answered by granting the exact thing requested; it may be withheld even when all the conditions of duʿa are fulfilled. (2) This is the hadith of Khabbab ibn al-Aratt. It was recorded by al-Nasaʾi 1/243; al-Tirmidhi 2/26 (Bulaq ed.); Ahmad 5/108–109; Ibn Hibban, no. 7192 (al-Ihsan); and al-Tabarani 1/187/2 = 4/57-59, through several chains from al-Zuhri who said: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal related to me from ʿAbd Allah ibn Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, from his father—who fought at Badr with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
