Facing the Kaʿbah
Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood for prayer, he would face the Kaʿbah, whether the prayer was obligatory or supererogatory (1). He also instructed others to do so, for he said to the man who had prayed poorly: “When you rise for prayer, perfect your ablution, then face the qiblah (direction of prayer) and pronounce the takbīr.” (2)
(1) This ruling is indisputably established, for it is mass-transmitted (tawatur) from the Prophet. Numerous hadiths confirm it, including the report of Ibn Umar and others, as will be mentioned shortly.
(2) The following excerpt forms part of the famous “hadith of the man who prayed badly,” narrated by Abu Hurayra and cited in Irwa al-Ghalil, no. 289:
A man entered the mosque to pray while the Messenger of Allah was sitting in one corner. After finishing, he greeted the Prophet, who replied, “And peace be upon you; go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” The man returned, repeated the prayer, and greeted him again. The Prophet said, “And peace be upon you; go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” On the third occasion the man said, “Then teach me.” The Prophet responded: “When you rise for prayer, perfect your wudu, face the qibla, pronounce the takbir, recite whatever you can of the Quran, then bow until you are at rest in ruku, rise until you stand upright, prostrate until you are at rest in sujud, sit until you are fully settled, prostrate again until you are at rest, then rise until you stand upright. Observe this throughout your entire prayer.”
Al-Bukhari recorded the narration (11/31, 467); Muslim (2/10–11); Ibn Majah (1/327); and al-Bayhaqi (2/15, 372) through the chain of Abd Allah ibn Numayr and Abu Usama Hammad ibn Usama, both from Ubayd Allah ibn Umar, from Said ibn Abi Said, from Abu Hurayra. It is also reported by Abu Dawud (1/136), al-Nasa i (41), al-Tirmidhi (2/103), and Ahmad.
