And he would also say: “Whoever rises in prayer during the night and recites one hundred verses will not be recorded among the heedless.” (1)
(1) The report comes from Abu Hurayra and was cited a few pages earlier, where we supplied both marfu (Prophetic) and mawquf (Companion) corroborations.
A second, fully reliable chain from Abu Hurayra is also extant. Ibn Nasr records (no. 66): “Ahmad b. Sa id al-Darimi → Ali b. al-Hasan → Abu Hamza al-Sukkari → al-A mash → Abu Salih → Abu Hurayra, raised to the Prophet: ‘Whoever recites one hundred verses in a single night will not be written among the heedless—or, he will be written among the devout (al-qanitin).’ ” This sanad is sound by the standards of al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Ibn Khuzayma included it in his Sahih (cited in al-Targhib, 1/222), and al-Hakim (1/308) transmitted it through Abdan → Abu Hamza with the unequivocal wording “he is written among the devout.” Al-Hakim graded it “sound on their criterion,” and al-Dhahabi agreed.
The hadith has further supports. Among them is the marfu narration from Abdullah b. Amr b. al- As: “Whoever stands (in prayer) with ten verses will not be written among the heedless; whoever stands with one hundred verses will be written among the devout; and whoever stands with one thousand verses will be written among those granted a vast reward (al-muqantarin).” Abu Dawud (5/221) and Ibn al-Sunni in Amal al-Yawm wa-l-Layla relate it through the route of Amr: Abu Sawiyya told him he heard Ibn Hujayra transmit it from Abdullah.
